On the 25th of February 1998, the Municipality of Rome, by order of the Mayor, established the "Antica Farmacia Reale" of Via del Gambero, as an "Historic Pharmacy".
The pharmacy has an archive, dating 1672, with detailed accounts on medicaments, equipments and furnishings used in the old "Apotheca ad usum samplicitarie" (herbalist's).
In a following inventory, dating 1679, the pharmacy is refered to as "Apotheca ad usum Farmacofale" (chemist's). These inventories - as well as several others from different periods - are kept in the pharmacy, giving documentary evidence both to the history and development of therapies and pharmaceutical science, and to the kind of medicaments used by our forefathers.
In 1913, with the "Giolitti" law, the term "Apotheca" disappeared, and was replaced by the word "Farmacia", the same for all usage: technical, scientific and administrative.
